Connecting to MongoDB

Last updated: April 9, 2025

Although we do not recommend connecting Explo directly to MongoDB and other nosql databases, this is technically supported. Explo can connect through the MongoDB Atlas BI Connector.

💡 Mongo is currently transitioning from its existing Atlas BI Connector to Atlas SQL. We are working on transitioning to support Atlas SQL but is not currently supported

After setting up the BI Connector you can connect to MongoDB through the MySQL Connector in Explo. For instructions on how to pull the credentials from Mongo and connect to Explo use the links below:

As mentioned above, although this is technically supported, we don't recommend this datasource as there can be certain limitations and performance may not optimized. We strongly recommend loading and flattening data from MongoDB into a SQL database that Explo can connect to.

Alternatively, Explo does offer connections to sources such as cube.dev that can serve as a semantic layer to connect to Mongo and can offer some additional performance benefits.
